Symphony No.9 From the New World
The Adagio of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, recently voted one of Australia's favourite pieces of classical music, is part of one of the most enduring Mozart masterworks. Coming from near the end of Mozart's short, eventful life, how can we not find this concerto both poignant and inspiring?
During his years in New York, Antonin Dvořák created the first major concert work still performed widely today which evokes the American west. Just before its premiere in 1893 Dvořák said that parts of his new symphony were inspired by Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha. Yet we can hear his homesickness for his native Bohemia in the haunting and unforgettable slow movement of this ever-popular 'New World' symphony.
Featuring one of Australia's greatest clarinettists, the MSO's own Philip Arkinstall, this compelling program opens with Beethoven's powerful overture to the tragedy Egmont, and is conducted by young Australian maestro Matthew Wood. Now living in the UK, he has already conducted such major orchestras as the Bournemouth Symphony, the Philharmonia and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
