Sydney Dance Company
Underland
Tuesday 22 March at 8pm
Choreographer Stephen Petronio's Underland
is an enigmatic world. Inspired by the tender, bitter-sweet
songs of pop balladeer Nick Cave, dancers hurl through
space with razor-sharp precision; fiercely energised
one moment, strikingly sensual the next.
On its 2003 National Premiere Tour, Underland
was received with extraordinary critical and audience
acclaim. Described by Petronio as an 'archaeological
dig through some of Nick Cave's most beautiful masterpieces',
Underland unravels in a series of solos, duets, quartets
and asymmetric ensemble formations.
Completing Petronio's vision is a triptych
of screens by visual designer Ken Tabachnick and video
artist Mike Daly; and subversive costumes by Tara Subkoff
- renowned for her fashion label Imitation of Christ.
The projected imagery provides a cinematic backdrop
for the journey, the mood of which, like Subkoff's costumes,
shifts in rhythm with Cave's music throughout this freneticially
energised piece.
Stephen Petronio began his dance career
as the first-ever male dancer of the acclaimed Trisha
Brown Company. He founded Stephen Petronio Company in
1984 and has since become recognised internationally
as one of the most innovative choreographers of his
generation.

THE RETURN OF THE TITTER, THE CHUCKLE,
THE BELLY LAUGH AND THE ROAR... and that's just from

An hysterical comedy set in Ancient Rome,
Flatfoot is a very different play from David Williamson
Comic genius Drew Forsythe plays Roman
playwright Titus Maccius Plautus, who has to convince
his producer, Crassus Dives, played by John Gregg that
his new play will be a hit and not offend the Roman
Censor.
Trouble is, the play hasn't yet been written,
but Plautus is not about to tell Crassus that, so he
acts it out before the cynical producer, and makes it
up as he goes along. He does have a little help from
his Greek wife, ex-dancer and seductress extraordinaire,

The Breath of Life
by David Hare
Tuesday 5 April at 8pm
They have only met once before - the common
thread they share exposes both of them in a way they
would never have imagined.
The wife meets the other woman - Madeleine
Palmer is a retired curator and self-reliant woman living
alone on the Isle of Wight. One day she receives a visit
from Frances Beale, whom she has only met once before,
and who is now enjoying sudden success late in life,
as a popular novelist.
The progress of a single night comes fascinatingly
to echo the hidden course of their lives, as they sift
through their memories, dreams, regrets and decisions,
unearthing answers to painful unknowns they would prefer
to leave alone. This refreshing slice of real life drama
and subtle intelligence will cut right to the heart.

Adapted for the stage by Don Mackay from
the autobiography by Moss Hart.

Wednesday 6 July at 8pm
Adapted and directed by Terence O'Connell
from Siobhán McHugh's book
Design Catherine Raven
Lighting Design Phil Lethlean

Choreography Alana Scanlan
Director's Associate Ken Moffat
A volunteer, a journalist, a nurse, the
wife of a Vietnam vet and an entertainer cross paths
at an Anzac Day march during the 1980's. The women are
transported back to the 1960's and early 1970's to their
youthful experiences in Vietnam into a memory world
where rice paddies, paper lanterns and ancient temples
team with G.I's, orphaned children and constant bombardment.
Nearly a thousand Australian women played
a part in the Vietnam War. Their experiences were extraordinary
- and they've now been brought to life in this collage
of true stories. The lives of all these women were changed
forever by Vietnam. And for many of them it was the
most vital and alive they had ever felt.
Minefields and Miniskirts
is full of surprises. You'd expect the pain of war in
this play, but you should also come prepared to laugh.
No bomb ever killed the Australian sense of humour.
These are the voices of those who were actually there:
ordinary women revealing how they survived a war and
discovered what they believed in.
Woven into the script are performances
of many iconic songs of the period written by female
singer/songwriters including Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez,
Carole King, Buffy St. Marie and Melanie Safka.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona
Thursday 21 July at 8pm
… how love can trifle with itself!
An outrageous story of love, friendship
and marriage, The Two Gentlemen Of Verona
is one of Shakespeare's earliest romantic comedies and
will delight audiences with its twists and turns involving
the flawed but passionate gentlemen Valentine and Proteus.
Fast moving action and a driving jazz
soundtrack underpin this farce about two friends who
fall in love with the same woman. Crammed with comic
devices: elopement by moonlight, bandits in the forest,
cunning disguises and a male friendship that is easily
destroyed when an attractive woman gets in the way.
The Two Gentlemen Of Verona is a short,
sharp comedy poking fun at the romance genre.
Directed by Peter Evans, Bell Shakespeare
again draws together an energetic cast for this entertaining
classic presented with great clarity and humour. The
Two Gentlemen Of Verona will surely entertain with its
fun and merriment. .

President Woodrow Wilson attended the
1919 Paris Peace Conference, accompanied by his second
wife Edith. On the agenda were his ideas for a League

not all is as it appears.
This intriguing play by Australian playwright
Ron Blair is full of twists and turns, keeping the audience

The result is packed with intrigue, deception and surprise.
Since the play premiered in 1973, President
Wilson in Paris has been produced numerous times
