GENERAL INFORMATION

Her Majesty's is one of Australia's most historic theatres. The theatre has served the people of Ballarat since its foundation in 1874 and has been in continuous use as a live theatre throughout its history.

Her Majesty's is owned and operated by the City of Ballarat as Ballarat's primary focus for the enjoyment of the performing arts. It was presented to the people of Ballarat in 1987 by the Royal South Street Society, which bought the building in 1965 as the home of its annual Competitions. The Royal South Street Society still occupies offices in the building and the Competitions are still held at Her Majesty's.

After the Society gave the Theatre to the City, an extensive renovation was undertaken, funded by the Victorian Government, the former Ballaarat City Council and the Hugh Williamson Foundation, together with other private donations. The renovation restored many important historical features, as well as supplying it with modern theatre facilities and safety equipment. Her Majesty's re-opened on 10th November 1990.
