Her Majesty's Theatre is owned by the City of Ballarat and operated by a Business Unit of the City Wellbeing Department.

The organisation structure is based around a four-way partnership between the City of Ballarat, the Community, the Business Unit and the Board of Management.

A pool of approximately 40 casual staff is engaged to run Theatre operations. All staff of Her Majesty's Theatre are employees of the City of Ballarat and work to the conditions of the Her Majesty's Theatre Local Area Work Agreement 2002 (an Appendix of the City of Ballarat Enterprise Bargaining Agreement). The City of Ballarat is a respondent to the Victorian Local Authorities Award 2001.

Business Unit: The people who make it happen.

The Business Unit is responsible for the venue management and the implementation of all programs.

Business development / Continuous Improvement Processes 2002-2003

  • To better equip the venue and move towards the attainment of the 'AAH' facility category rating.

  • To be less reliant on the City of Ballarat subsidy and to generate income from alternative but affiliated activities e.g. event ticketing, consultancies, sale of services/ expertise, extended use of PASS Software.

  • To conduct a Feasibility study on the viability of upgrading and extending facilities at Her Majesty's Theatre and linking the Theatre to the Mechanics' Institute building.

  • To develop & deliver and training programs for Theatre staff and Hiring organisations to reach a higher professional levels of technical production expertise and in Front of House services.

  • To improve all Services for patrons eg. extend Online ticketing services, distribute Weekend Parking information.

  • To increase audience attendance by presenting diverse, interesting theatrical experiences in vibrant programs, including an annual Theatre season, Daytime Series and a non-mainstream theatre program.

  • To devise programs that generate an interest in Theatre history eg. create Spooky stories in the Theatre production, extend Theatre tours program.

  • To conduct training and development programs to enhance skills of Board of Management members & staff.

  • To extend Corporate Development opportunities for Businesses through attendance at Theatre programs.

  • To promote Ballarat through utilisation of the Ballarat * eureka branding.

  • To ensure that all Occupational Health & Safety, Disability, Privacy and other relevant legislative requirements are met.

Board Working Groups comprise both Board and Staff members.

Current Working Groups are:

1. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY

2. PROGRAMMING - development and approval of the Theatre Season, special entrepreneurial projects

3. STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT - The objectives of the Group are:

  • To contribute to the Theatre's sustainability as a community asset into the future, resulting in increased community awareness, audiences, income and strategic relationships and partnerships

  • To plan for the ongoing upgrade and development of the venue and its facilities by informing and influencing key Council decision making processes.

4. MAYTE (Moving All Youth Towards Entertainment) Youth Theatre Group - This group liaises with the MAYTE Youth Theatre Group inc, an independent group sponsored by the Board and to provide opportunities for Ballarat youth to operate a performance group. The Board initiated the group in order to provide a youth point of view to the Board.

The broad responsibilities of the Board are:

  • To formulate broad policy for the future of the Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit

  • To make recommendations about Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit operations to the Ballarat City Council

  • To overview the ongoing management and staffing structures of the Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit

  • To develop and promote interest within the community in Her Majesty's Theatre and the performing arts

  • To maximise funding opportunities (including any grants made available through State or Federal government sources) for the development of activities of the Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit.

  • To encourage sponsorship and donations for activities of the Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit.

  • To encourage greater community participation in the activities of the Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit.

  • To develop and promote the Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit entrepreneurial activities.

  • To monitor the annual recurrent and Capital budgets for the Her Majesty's Theatre Business Unit as adopted by the Ballarat City Council.

All positions on the Board are honorary.
